Our Mission
To support deserving and high achieving Northern Kenyan students in attending secondary and university level schools. The Fund places an emphasis on providing scholarships to female students since they have fewer opportunities to attend secondary school and beyond.
Our Vision
To utilize the gift of education and in turn the power of knowledge, to curb poverty in one of the most remote and marginalized regions of Kenya.
Where We Work
We work in the most underdeveloped, harsh, and remote part of Kenya– Marsabit County’s Chalbi Desert, where a 4+ year long drought, reliance on pastoralism, and political conflicts have caused severe suffering.
Climate stressors have decimated local livestock assets, directly impacting pastoralists’ ability to survive, let alone earn income.
Today, an estimated 57 Million people in the Horn of Africa live in extreme poverty. With survival in question, most local families cannot invest in education for their children, further perpetuating systemic insecurities.
Northern Kenya Fund is working to stop this cycle.
Less than 9% of the population in Marsabit County have completed secondary school.
Our Process
-
Financial Aid
We provide scholarships for our students to attend secondary and university schooling, purchase uniforms, and access the books and supplies necessary to succeed.
-
Mentorship
We have learned that mentorship is essential. We are launching a county wide girls mentoring program that fosters self-empowerment and higher achieving students.
-
Livelihood Projects
We know that students cannot effectively learn when their basic needs are not met. We work with families to assist with providing water, sanitary pads, as well as tools necessary to face climate change shocks.
